4th of July Safety: Essential Tips for a Fun and Accident-Free Holiday

Written by Unitas Financial Services | Jul 1, 2025 1:08:01 PM

The Fourth of July is one of the most celebrated holidays in the U.S.—a time for fireworks, family cookouts, boating, and backyard fun. But along with the excitement comes an increased risk of injuries, fires, and accidents.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), there were over 10,200 firework-related injuries treated in emergency rooms in 2022, with 73% occurring in the weeks around July 4th. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) also reports that more fires are reported on Independence Day than any other day of the year, with fireworks accounting for nearly 19,500 fires annually, including structure fires, vehicle fires, and grass fires.

Whether you're hosting a BBQ, heading to the lake, or planning to catch a fireworks show, safety should always come first. Here are practical, easy-to-follow tips to help you and your loved ones enjoy a safe and memorable Independence Day weekend.

Firework Safety

Attend a professional fireworks display instead of setting off your own, especially in residential areas.
  • If using legal fireworks:
    • Light them one at a time and step back quickly.
    • Never relight a dud. Wait 20 minutes and soak it in water.
    • Keep a bucket of water or hose nearby.
    • Never allow children to handle fireworks.
    • Store fireworks in a cool, dry place away from flammable materials.

Grill & Fire Safety

    • Keep grills at least 10 feet away from homes, decks, and trees.
    • Clean the grill to prevent grease fires.
    • Never leave a grill unattended, especially around children or pets.
    • Let coals cool completely before discarding them in a metal container.
    • Keep a fire extinguisher nearby and know how to use it.

Water Safety

    • Always supervise children near pools, lakes, or beaches.
    • Use life jackets when boating, especially for kids and weak swimmers.
    • Avoid swimming alone or under the influence of alcohol.
    • Pay attention to posted signs or flags at beaches warning of rip currents.

Road & Travel Safety

    • Expect heavier traffic—plan and allow extra time.
    • Avoid distractions like texting or fiddling with navigation apps.
    • Designate a sober driver if you're attending parties or events where alcohol is served.
    • Be alert for pedestrians and cyclists, especially in neighborhoods and at night.

Heat & Hydration

    • Stay hydrated—drink water regularly, even if you’re not thirsty.
    • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
    • Take breaks in the shade or indoors to avoid overheating.
    • Know the signs of heat exhaustion: dizziness, nausea, and heavy sweating.

Pet Safety

    • Keep pets indoors during fireworks; they may become frightened or anxious.
    • Ensure pets have updated ID tags or microchips in case they escape.
    • Don’t give pets table scraps, alcohol, or bones, which can be harmful.
    • Create a quiet, safe space for pets during fireworks or parties.
